What Is AI Workflow Automation?
AI workflow automation combines traditional workflow automation (connecting apps, triggering actions, moving data) with artificial intelligence capabilities like natural language processing, decision-making, and content generation. Instead of just following rigid if-then rules, AI-powered automation tools can understand context, make decisions, and handle tasks that previously required human judgment.
The market has bifurcated into two clear tiers in 2026: traditional automation platforms like Zapier, Make.com, and n8n that have added AI features on top of their existing workflow engines, and AI-native platforms like Lindy.ai, Gumloop, and Relevance AI that were built from the ground up around large language models and agent architectures.
How We Test
We evaluate each platform across six criteria over a three-week testing period: ease of setup for a non-technical user, integration depth with common business tools (HubSpot, Gmail, Slack), AI capability maturity, cost-at-scale modeling, reliability and error handling, and documentation quality. Every platform is tested with real workflows, not demos.
Our rankings are never influenced by affiliate relationships. We cite third-party review scores (G2, Trustpilot) alongside our own testing notes, including unflattering data like Zapier's 1.4/5 Trustpilot score. Read our full methodology.
